Almost a decade ago, when I started volunteering in the district, I was asked to serve on the district leadership team. On this team of leaders, there are parent representatives from each campus, the business community, community members, teachers and administrators. At that time, Dr. Jeff Arnett was the Deputy Superintendent and he conducted the meetings. Dr. Arnett would bring to the group topics for discussion, especially things that we were doing as a district which had been identified as areas for possible improvement. At that time, we had our late start calendar days, which were being tried as early release to see what worked best for our families and our teaching staff. One parent asked, "Is there any chance we could also consider expanding the no homework calendar days to be around some of the various religious holidays so that the students needing to fast or celebrate, will have a break from their work and an opportunity to participate?" Dr. Arnett and the entire room of leaders were so excited to make the calendar inclusive to all our students, we established a committee to research the different religious celebrations of our students, and produced a list for the next year to guide the dates for strategic placement of no homework and early release days. This was the meeting where I knew I was in the right place! This new calendar could ease the stress and strain experienced by students attempting to observe a holiday while juggling school work. This new calendar could also encourage non-observing students to participate and embrace an opportunity to learn about different faith traditions, allowing our students to not only be more community minded, but global as well! This new inclusive calendar marked a step towards recognizing and respecting the different religious backgrounds here in our Eanes schools. This was a big step to improve student wellbeing and health, and I loved my time in service on the District Leadership Team.
