Things We Learn as We Listen

One of my favorite parts of running for school board has been the opportunity to meet so many new people I may not have had the chance to get to know otherwise. I'm meeting parents with kids getting ready to start kindergarten all the way up to the parent with success stories of their now 33 year old son and forever Chap. These parents have been kind enough to share their journey in Eanes leaving the opportunity for gaining experience from the past as well as the hopes and aspirations of the future Chap just about to step foot in a classroom.

I have been graciously invited to watch a Soccer Mom Shoot Out under the stadium lights where we spent the evening cheering the hard working athletes on to victory. I heard an impressive presentation from the robotics Team Appreciate where they outlined how they support a passion for STEM in all students, sharing how they have been reconfiguring toys to use as communication devices for students with disabilities. The robotics team also supports their competition by generously offering their space and even machine parts because as they explained to me, "We are all stronger competitors when we are all performing at our best." I learned a lot from listening to those students and their mission to change the way our community embraces STEM.

On Friday, I attended the annual Westies where they recognized 3 student finalists for Young Citizen of the Year for their contributed time, energy, and heart to both the school community and the Westlake community at large. The Westies also recognized the Young Entrepreneur of the Year where we caught a glimpse of the creative energy in startup programs by high school incubator students to also meeting Kate's Cookie Co where she understands that children with certain conditions may benefit from a gluten-free diet. Due to the challenges of finding delicious gluten-free cookies, she decided to create her own! They are delicious. You can get some yourself on Instagram @KatesCookieCoATX. You're welcome!

Later that evening, I was speaking with some parents that wanted to highlight the people they have found inspirational at Eanes. They challenged me in my role as a leader to remember to take care of and recognize all our staff. One of the parents shared her gratitude for having such a caring bus driver, who takes pride in her bus, decorating it for different celebrations. What a great opening to a student's day when your bus is so welcoming! This mom surveyed the driver with a favorite things list so that the families could shower her with thanks and appreciation. Leading with love is a common trait I have found in our parents and an impactful benefit to the entire community, but in these stories, love is especially important in our schools.

Reflecting on this one week, I can see that a truly successful community is based on the consideration of others and collaboration from everyone. With all the success stories, there were also stories of setbacks and room for growth. I'm so grateful for your time and consideration, I look forward to serving our community on the Board of Trustees and I would love to hear your story.
